    Family Cohen Jerusalem

Judy - the words the Bride spoke are those which are used when putting on tephillin. It is Hashem's betrothal to the Children of Israel too!

I should have known this, shouldn't I? But of course I was never taught the words you use on putting on tefillin. And the interesting thing is that no-one else remarked on that, including none of the men there who I know do put on tefillin, and including a leading Jewish educationist in London to whom I showed this post. Maybe that says something about whether most men (and women who are experts in Jewish education) are aware of what exactly the words say when the men say them.

Because, yes, it is rather stunning to be on the receiving end of that sort of declaration of betrothal. How much do we feel aware of it?
