    I am sure that, to the degree that machismo and sexism are more persistent in Israel than in Europe or North America, it has less to do with militarism than it does with Oriental influences in Israeli society.

    I strongly disagree. The key figure who epitomised and validated a tradition of macho sexism in Israel which still lingers on was Moshe Dayan. The post from Imshin about her mother in law's experience in the army was from a time when Sephardi-Mizrachi soldiers did not get power positions. The whole tradition drew also on the kibbutz ethic, which celebrated a stereotype of the strong outdoor macho man and a culture which rejected traditional sexual mores. "Oriental"influences??? I don't think so....
